Duality – Part 2
Or
Permission To Heal, Sir

I recently wrote more than 1,000 words on the subject of duality.  A more thorough explication is found in 33 words from the Tao Te Ching:

The Tao begot one.
One begot two.
Two begot three.
And three begot the ten thousand things.
The ten thousand things carry Yin and embrace Yang.
They achieve harmony by combining these forces

If this material world of ours – the 10,000 things – arose from the harmonious energy of the Yin and the Yang, then separation and duality are inherent in its structure.  Unity is found on a different level.

A gentleman from Idaho Springs, Colorado – Al Brown – once gave me a good demonstration of this concept.  He began with a package of two saltine crackers that came with a bowl of soup at a restaurant.  The package was the one.  He opened the package and removed the crackers.  The one begot two.  Then he took the action of holding those crackers and crushing them – the action being the three – and from it arose the 10,000.  To reach a place where there is unity and not duality, it is necessary to return to the level of the original package.

Based on some recent events, I would like to revisit the subject now in a slightly different context.

A few days ago I attended a gathering for a friend named Imara who was celebrating her fifty-something birthday.  Among other things, she is a well-known and respected Reiki teacher and practitioner.  Her comments at the end of the evening included the admonition that those working with Reiki must always obtain permission before sending the energy to another.  Sometimes circumstances may make it difficult or impossible to obtain express verbal permission, but in those instances one may receive a mental permission (you will know it when that occurs).

She said that if a person is unable to obtain or feel any type of permission, it would be okay to send “white light” to another, but not okay to expressly direct Reiki or healing energy.

Strangely enough, this simple concept is subject to criticism by various “New Age” kinds of people.  Only two days earlier, I had read the following comment to a blog on the internet (in all capital letters, just as shown here, making it seem the writer was screaming):

IN THE AGE OF AQUARIUS, IT IS MORE AND MORE KNOWN IN THE ENLIGHTENED WORLD THAT WE ALL ARE GODS AND GODDESSES AND THAT WE MUST STOP GIVING OUR POWER TO FEAR OF THIS AND THAT, WHICH WE HAVE DONE FOR MILLENAIRIES.

TIME TO TAKE BACK OUR POWER. AS YOU SAY, DEAR ELMA, WE ARE ALL ONE… IF YOU SUFFER, I SUFFER..

THE SAYING OF PEOPLE WHO SAY WE HAVE TO ASK PERMISSION IS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT US SUBMMITTED TO SOME DEVILISH POWER. ENOUGH!!!

THE TIME FOR CONTROL IS SLOWLY FADING AWAY. THIS IS A NEW WORLD SINCE DECEMBER 21, 2012. OFF WITH THE OLD WAY OF THINKING.

THE WORLD WILL NEVER CHANGE IF WE CONTINUE THINKING THE SAME OLD. LET’S GET YOUNGER

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN MASTER JESUS ASK PERMISSION OF ANYONE BEFORE HE HEALED?

DEAR ELMA, YOU GOT IT SO RIGHT… WHO SAID WE HAD TO SUFFER IN ORDER TO LIVE? THE WORLD WILL BE PARADISE THE DAY WE ARE ALL HEALED…

THANK YOU SO MUCH, PRECIOUS ELMA,
LOVE AND LIGHT’

MICHELLE

P.S. IT IS IN THE BIBLE, EVEN JESUS SAID IT; ‘AREN’T YOU ALL GODS?’

As I read this, “Michelle” seems to be saying that we are not only gods and goddesses; we are also “all one.”  Therefore, the act of recognizing some other is the work of the devil.  Could that be right?  I think not.  If we are all one then the devil is also a part of that unity, so the devil is also a god or goddess.

She then discusses “Master Jesus” as if he is a being separate from the rest of us – but if there is unity, it must include Jesus and the devil.

Do we have any record of Jesus asking permission before a healing?  Probably not, because we have only been told of those times Jesus healed another after being asked to do so, in which case the permission was implied.  There is no Biblical account of Jesus simply deciding on his own to heal someone.

Finally, this “Michelle” misquotes the Bible to try to give added support to her position.  I don’t believe the Bible mentions anyone asking, “Aren’t you all gods?”  Rather, in John 10, the Scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of blasphemy because he had said he was the Son of God.  He answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods?’” (John 10:34).

He was quoting from the 82nd Psalm which admonished those in power to refrain from judging others unjustly.  The Psalmist admonished those with power over others by saying, “I have said, you are gods and all of you are children of the most high.  But you shall die like men . . .”   (Psalm 82:6-7)  That was one of many examples of Jesus quoting traditional Jewish scripture to expose the leaders of the Jews as hypocrites for not following the very rules with which they sought to condemn Him.

Returning now to the concept of duality that began this post, we are material beings in a material world which is comprised, more or less harmoniously, of Yin and Yang.  Accordingly, despite what some wish to believe, there is a level at which you and I are separate.

If you are a physician or a psychiatrist or a Reiki master or an evil scientist trying to create a master race, and you want to “improve” my condition, you could ask me to permit you to help me to change; or you could strap me to a table and force your change upon me.  It is obvious that the former is the more ethical procedure.

Perhaps even more important than ethics is efficacy.  When a patient is asked to permit the physician or healer to assist, the focus is on the patient – on the person in need of healing.  When the healing procedure is applied without first asking permission, the focus is on the person who performs the procedure.  It is a basic rule (which I will not explain right now) that energy flows where attention goes.  Thus, there is a much better chance of success if attention or focus is on the person receiving the healing and not on the so-called healer.

Ultimately, all healing is self-healing.  The role of the healer or physician or surgeon is only to aid or facilitate the change from a state in which healing is necessary to a state in which it has been accomplished – states which are separate because ours is a dualistic, material world.

So, can healing be accomplished without asking the permission of the patient?  Of course it can.  However, it almost always happens more easily, and certainly more ethically, when permission is sought and received.
