Healing – Part 3

I began studying alternative healing methods to deal with a physical problem of my own. Although I believe that all healing is ultimately self-healing, I have learned that it is quite difficult to consciously try to heal yourself. Often, it is more effective to use energy work to help others.

The term “energy work” seems to fit with the concept of self-healing. The healing process may be compared to an automobile battery. Some cold winter days a battery may have enough juice to play the radio and grind the engine, but not enough to start the car. If you can wait until the air is a little warmer, the battery may be adequate. However, it may be necessary to get out jumper cables and ask a neighbor for help.

Energy work is sometimes like the Sun, acting in the “air” around an ailing physical body, and sometimes like a jumper cable giving the physical body the extra energy it may need. I prefer to work with others remotely. There is no need for physical contact to send healing energy. The work can be done from anywhere and instantly transmitted anywhere else. Some examples may clarify the concept.

Case Study No. 1

I was home on a Saturday morning while my wife Cathy, a nurse, had to work. She called me to say she had a patient who was in bad shape and asked if I would “do some Reiki or something.” She had never before made such a request, so I knew the patient’s condition must be serious.

I work best when I am able to create an image. I began meditating, closing my eyes and waiting. I began to see, in my mind’s eye, the back yard of an old house. A flower garden was in disrepair, the paint on the fence was peeling and the gate was falling off its hinges. To me, this represented the woman’s condition. I imagined then that I could summon a repair crew of “garden helpers” who appeared and immediately began fixing the gate, painting the fence and turning the garden into a thing of beauty.

As the helpers finished their work, I saw an elderly lady walk from the side of the house into the back yard. This surprised me because Cathy works with mothers and babies. I was anticipating seeing a new mother, but when viewing images I accept whatever appears. The lady had a distant look in her eyes as I pointed out the improvements to her yard. I said that everything was so nice now it would be a shame if she left it all behind. I showed her how the gate had been repaired, telling her that if she must leave it would be simple; or just as simple if she wanted to come back. After that, the image faded.

When Cathy got home, I asked her about the patient. She told me the woman was an elderly surgical patient who was in the maternity area because no beds were available on the surgical floor. However, at about the same time I was doing the energy work, a bed had opened up in ICU and the woman had been moved there to receive the special care she needed.

Case Study No. 2

I received a telephone call from a friend who said her sister-in-law in St. Louis had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. The doctor was recommending a radical mastectomy as soon as possible. The patient was frightened, but had chosen to go to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to learn if there were any alternatives. The Mayo Clinic physicians confirmed the original diagnosis and surgery was scheduled for the following day. My friend asked if I could do anything to help.

Again, I felt I should work with images. As I meditated, I felt I was sitting in a pew at Santuario de Chimayo, a church in New Mexico famous for its miraculous healing dirt – the “Lourdes of the Southwest.” I saw the back door of the church open and a woman – I assumed it was the patient – walked toward the altar. She genuflected and then went into the room off to the left which contains the dirt, as well as crutches and canes and other things that people have left behind after healings. I did not see what went on in that room. After a few minutes the woman returned, she nodded toward me and left the church.

The surgery went ahead as scheduled, but the cancer was found to be more localized than the tests had indicated. Only a lumpectomy was needed.

Case Study No. 3

Another friend told me about a friend of his who was being treated for a glioblastoma, a very aggressive and often deadly brain cancer. At the patient’s request, I began energy work. After doing several things to try to build up healing energy, I paused to see what image might appear. In my imagination I saw a crowd of people around a spiral staircase rising to a balcony. A young woman in a flowing dress was climbing the stairs. She stopped and waved to the crowd as she reached a landing. The image faded.

The next evening, I repeated the process. This time I envisioned her with longer hair and going farther up the stairs before stopping to wave. This recurred for two or three more days, and each time the woman’s hair was longer and she climbed farther up the stairway. When at last she reached the balcony, her flowing hair hanging over the railing, I knew I had done all I could.

The woman completed her course of radiation and chemo-therapy. The follow-up tests showed her to be cancer free.

I honestly don’t know whether anything I did made one iota of difference in the outcome of any of these women’s self-healing. Maybe I helped. Anyway, I think these cases make good stories.

    • I recently read a story about a depressed young man who was part of a clinical study of a new antidepressant. After several weeks, he still felt that life was unbearable so he decided to take all the rest of his medication and once and end it all. He became violently ill and was losing consciousness when he was found and rushed to the hospital. In the emergency room they learned that he had been in the placebo group so he had actually taken a lot of sugar pills. He suddenly felt better and went home. the mind does have incredible power, for good or ill – placebo or nocebo.

  1. It seems absolutely sensible to me that, considering the connectedness of all, “coincidence” is nothing of the sort. The light comes as our belief in separate parts and fragments dissolves before our eyes.
